Advanced Research Base

To support field activities, the PEA has the Advanced Research Base in Porto Rico – PR, located on the banks of the Paraná River. Covering an area of more than 90,000 m², the base provides complete infrastructure for students and researchers, including dormitories, a dining hall, laboratories, classrooms, mesocosms for experiments, boats, and its own vehicles.

In the scientific context, the Base hosts site 6 of the Long-Term Ecological Program, funded by CNPq for more than 10 years, and the Paraná River Floodplain Demosite, Brazil, which is part of the Demonstration Projects on Ecohydrology program, under the International Hydrological Programme and endorsed by UNESCO.

Several other scientific projects have been developed at the Base facilities, or using its infrastructure, through national exchanges (São Paulo State University, Londrina State University, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of Goiás, among others) and international exchanges (Royal Belgium Institute of Natural Science, Mississippi State University, Texas A&M University, University of Lódz, European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology/UNESCO, University of Glasgow, among others).

The Base also provides support for the development of various undergraduate and graduate research projects from Brazilian institutions, such as UEM itself, Londrina State University, Paranaense University, Federal University of Goiás, and foreign institutions, such as the University of Glasgow, Mississippi State University, and Texas A&M University.

Educational activities are also conducted at the Base with UEM students and teachers from municipal and state schools in Porto Rico and neighboring municipalities. All these activities (research and teaching) have been carried out at the Base for more than two decades, using equipment, boats, and other facilities. In total, more than 200 dissertations and theses have been developed from UEM’s graduate programs and other institutions.

Infrastructure

The Base is located 170 km from the main campus of the State University of Maringá and two kilometers from the urban perimeter of the city of Porto Rico, on the left bank of the Paraná River, at the border between the states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Situated on a 94,680 m² plot owned by UEM/Nupélia, the base is equipped with public water supply, electricity, telephone, internet, a weather station, and seven masonry buildings. These are:

It has two laboratories, one of which is climate-controlled with 30 aquariums (temperature adjustable between 10 and 35 °C), as well as accommodations for 28 people.

Contains four apartments for visiting researchers, with accommodations, a study room, and internet access.

Classroom with a capacity of 40 people.
